Sucky Friday Nite

Friday- Totally sucked and wasn't what I had planned at all! Well, Miss Ivy was invited to her first ever sleep over birthday party for her cousin Jaiya. When I went to drop her off, my sister wasn't there and still at the daycare. Hmm. So I walked over there, only 1 address away from my brother's house. It turns out that one of our latchkey assistants went to pick up our group of kids from school. She waited for one of the kids for awhile, then walked the group back to the center. When she got there, she called the school to see if the kid (R-3rd grade) was waiting in the office or something. No. She then called the mom at work to see if she had picked him up. No. So, we have a missing kid. At this time it was 330.

Sometimes this happens when they decide to head to a friend's house or something, so we aren't too concerned right after school. Continue with the afternoon.

By the time I get there it is 700 and still no R. The cops were called, the school interviewed along with our staff. So far they had found out that R had walked home which is about 9 blocks from school. He then broke into his house, got his bike, took off his sweatshirt and left his house at some point. They were checking into who all of his friends are at school and calling them.

My sister is just sick. She goes to throw up twice. One of her son's got lost once and then hid once as well. she was so worried, first of all for R, but secondly for the business. Since we had taken him to school, he was ours to pick up. My brother is there with her, and so am I and our head latchkey teacher.

At 830 R's grandma stops by so we can copy pictures of him to pass out. It was so horrible all we could do was wait. My brother and I took turns driving around. The police told my sister that she had to stay at the center, in case he came back there. It was now dark and cold. I haven't ever been so worried for a kid for so long. It was torture.

Ivy decides that she doesn't want to stay, so I run her home. In the car on the way back, my brother calls and says that the police have R and he is fine! Relief.

Here was the story. R says that he planned the whole thing. He snuck out of a side door to avoid our assistant. When the group was crossing the street, he hid so they wouldn't see him sneaking away. He walked home, got his bike. Went to the bike racing track 25 blocks away. Rode his bike, then started home and got lost and scared. When a car stopped, he told them his grandma's address and got taken there.

What a horrible night. I remember how horrible it all was when my nephew was missing. I haven't yet lost either of my kids, but I know that it happens. Kids are so smart. What a sick feeling. When we were missing Julius, I wanted to whup him. But when I saw him, I just hugged him and cried. And whenever I remember it, I call him to check on him.

Again, relief.

Okay, that is skeeeery! Another case of a kid being too smart for their own good! I am SO glad that you found him, and he was safe! I hope his parents didn't blame you all. Sounds like all the adults did everything they could to keep him safe!

So you work at/run a daycare?? I worked at one before my kiddos!! hehe

I'm so happy everything turned out alright. I hope this is a lesson for that little boy, and he never makes that mistake again. Poor kid is probably really scared, sometimes fear is a good thing.
